OFFSHORE OIL & GAS PLATFORMS :THE GIANTS OF THE WATER-WORLD

THE 5 BIGGEST OFFSHORE OIL PLATFORMS IN THE WORLD

Offshore platforms are critical for meeting the ever increasing global oil demands. Platforms are located across the marine world but most of these platforms are located in the Gulf of Mexico and the Persian Gulf. There are different types of platforms like jack-up rigs, fixed platforms, semi-submersibles etc. Some are meant for shallow waters closer to shore while others can operate in extremely deep waters in the middle of the ocean.

The biggest offshore oil platforms reach hundreds or thousands of feet down to the seabed and extend high above the water and weigh many hundreds of tons. They are similar to self sufficient factories with all necessary drilling equipment and storage facilities . They also have excellent and well furnished accommodation facilities for the personnel working on board(POB). In this BLOG lets take a look at the biggest offshore platforms in the world.

#5 PETRONIUS

This impressively giant platform is located about 130 miles southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico, Petronius is the five-largest offshore oil platform in the world and is operated by Chevron. Unlike other tower oil platforms, Petronius is designed to sway with the ocean's force rather than to resist it. Due to its flexible design, the tower can sway more than 2% of its height. Most other structures are designed to sway within 0.5% of their height.

 #4. OLYMPUS

Shell’s Olympus is a tension leg oil platform which is located at the Mars field in the Gulf of Mexico, aimed at a long term production of at-least 2 more decades of production. This platform is ranked at 4th largest .More than 20 wells are operational here since 2014 and more than 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent was achieved by beginning of 2017.

#3. HIBERNIA

The Hibernia is a massive 496,040-ton gravity base structure (GBS) located approximately 196 miles east of Newfoundland, Canada. This reached the 3rd largest in our list and is indeed the heaviest offshore oil platform in the world. The Hibernia sits at a depth of 260 feet of water. The Hibernia has preached a peak of more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent and  it is expected to continue production until 2050.

PISTA has been providing INTERNATIONAL SAFETY TRAINING to Indian offshore workers efficiently and safely since 2018.

Working on an offshore platform is challenging but rewarding. Whether you work on one of the world’s biggest rigs or a smaller platform or vessel, you are expected to have the basic necessary training to do your job. You also have the right to expect that the platform where you work provides the correct equipment and tools . The working conditions need to be properly maintained and all activities need to be free from every avoidable hazard.

At PISTA we have been training and supporting both new entrants and experienced workers who are continuing or returning to offshore work since 2018. We have successfully and safely trained 4000+ delegates with the apt knowledge facilitated by OPITO to ensure O&G Industry remains one of the safest career options in the world.
